HSON and its director awarded by Scientific Society of Arab Nursing Faculties

The Rafic Hariri School of Nursing (HSON) and its director, Professor Huda Huijer, as well as a nursing thesis student, Mohammed Saab, have been awarded by the Scientific Society of Arab Nursing Faculties, for their contributions to the field of nursing. HSON received the Excellence Award for Distinguished Academic Institution; Huijer received the Excellence Award for Distinguished Faculty Member; and Saab won the Distinguished Master’s Thesis Award, for his thesis on surviving testicular cancer, based on Lebanese patients. Established in 1998 and now with 98 members from various Arab colleges, the Scientific Society of Arab Nursing Faculties aims to promote scientific research and enhance the quality of nursing education in the Arab region. In 2009, it started awarding individuals and institutions for their outstanding and enduring achievements in nursing. “This is a significant recognition by colleagues in the region of the achievements and contributions of HSON toward the development of the profession,” said Huijer. “Personally, I feel honored and thrilled to have been selected for this award, which I view as the best recognition for my work in the field of pain management and palliative care in Lebanon and the region,” she added. Huijer, who earned her PhD in nursing from the University of Florida in 1978, has focused most of her research studies on pain management and palliative care in children and adults. She was one of the first researchers in the United States to investigate the phenomenon of pain in children. She has received a Life Time Achievement Award in London on her work in pain management and palliative care from the McMillan Cancer Fund and the International Journal of Palliative Nursing. She serves on several national, regional, and international boards and is a founding member of the European Academy of Nursing Science (EANS) and an elected International Fellow to the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). Up until very recenty, she was the president of the Lebanese Society for the Study of Pain. Huijer has held professorial positions at the University of California San Francisco, University of Maastricht, the Netherlands, University of Surrey & University of Manchester, the UK, and the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, since 2003. In addition to writing two books and publishing more than 300 scientific articles, Huijer has supervised around 40 PhD dissertations in the field. The award also coincides with HSON’s upcoming 110th anniversary, which will be kicked off in 2015. Founded in 1905, AUB's nursing school was the first in the Arab region and among the first in the world. Later, it would become the first school at AUB to admit women, the first school outside the United States to be accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and the first in the region to become a member of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Currently, HSON offers BSN, RN-BSN, BS-BSN, and MSN degrees and is planning to launch a PhD program soon. “As part of our 110th anniversary, we are going beyond our geographical boundaries to develop strategic partnerships with the region, focusing on research collaboration. These awards will propel us forward to help us raise the research profile of nursing in the region.”

Prof. Muayad Mustafa Ahmad - University of Jordan won the distinguished research award for this year 2014

Prof. Dr. Muayad Ahmed, holds a doctorate in 2000 from the University of Case Western Reserve, the United States of America. Specialization: Adult Health Nursing, acute and chronic cases. Research Interests: Adult Health Nursing, cope with the disease, cognitive, cancer care, the quality of health care, standards of psychometric research tools.

The winner for this year is Mr. Mohammad Saab from Lebanon.
